The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
